Why the BigRentz and Bigge figures differ

For a small crane by the hour, BigRentz's guide lists “$150 to $350/hour” in a table headed “Average Hourly Rental Rate (Crane Only)” (BigRentz). Bigge says “Crane rental prices typically range from $300 to $1,500 per hour, depending on the crane class” (Bigge). By the day, both list $300 to $600 for a small crane. BigRentz's Rochester page says small mobile cranes cost “around $200 per day” (BigRentz Rochester page).

What the sources themselves say:

  • Scope. BigRentz labels its hourly and daily tables “Crane Only” and says an operator adds “$50 to $150 per hour.” Bigge offers operated rentals only in California and parts of Utah, and bare (crane-only) rentals nationwide, but doesn't say whether its $300 to $1,500 range is operated or bare.
  • Minimums. BigRentz says hourly rentals often carry a daily minimum that “can range from three to eight hours.” Bigge's page doesn't state a minimum.
  • Region. BigRentz says “Prices vary by region” but doesn't say which region its figures reflect. Bigge's range doesn't name a region. BigRentz's Rochester page doesn't say whether its $200-a-day figure is specific to Rochester or what it includes.

Neither source explains the gap directly, so it's unclear why the figures differ or which is closer to a Rochester price. Ask any provider what the rate includes and how hours are counted.

What drives cost

What moves a crane rental price

The hourly rate is only one line on a crane bill. Tonnage, hourly minimums, travel, the operator and permits all change the total. Figures below are examples, each with where it's from.

Tonnage

Bigger cranes cost more per hour. Missouri Crane in Wentzville, MO lists $195.00 an hour for a 15–30 ton crane and $415.00 an hour for a 90 ton crane. The weight of the load and how far it is from the crane decide the size.

Checked Oct 29, 2026 · Missouri Crane

Hourly minimums and overtime

A short lift is still billed for the minimum. Missouri Crane in Wentzville, MO lists minimums of 3 to 8 hours depending on the crane, and Advanced Crane in Norwalk, CA lists 4 hours (3 for its 135 ft crane). Advanced Crane lists overtime before 6:00 AM and after 5:00 PM at $50.00 an hour.

Checked Oct 29, 2026 · Missouri Crane · Advanced Crane

Travel to the site

“Portal to portal” means the clock runs from when the crane leaves the yard until it gets back. Missouri Crane in Wentzville, MO charges its minimums portal to portal, and Advanced Crane in Norwalk, CA adds a 10% fuel surcharge. Bigge says mobilization “may be billed separately.”

Operator and crew

Missouri Crane in Wentzville, MO includes a union operator in its rates, plus an oiler on its 50 to 90 ton cranes. BigRentz, a national rental marketplace, says an operator adds “$50 to $150 per hour” to a crane-only rental. Ask whether the operator is included.

Permits and lift plans

A crane in a City of Rochester street or sidewalk needs a right-of-way permit. We didn't find a published fee for it. Bigge says permits may be billed separately. See permits below.

Rigging

Slings, spreader bars and riggers can be extra. Missouri Crane in Wentzville, MO lists an additional rigger and heavy-duty truck at $95.00 an hour ($125.00 with a trailer).

Permits

Permits that can add cost in Rochester

In the City of Rochester, a permit is required for work in the public right-of-way, including streets, curbs and sidewalks. Cranes are listed under Barricade/Obstruction permits. See the City's Street and Sidewalk Right-of-Way Permits page, and our site access and permits notes. Power lines near the lift need planning under OSHA 1926.1408.

We didn't find a published fee for a crane right-of-way permit, so we don't list one. Ask the City or the crane company.
